Professor of Climate Change Impacts at Newcastle University

Professor Hayley Fowler

Title

Professor Hayley J. Fowler is a British climate scientist and hydrologist based at Newcastle University, where she holds the position of Professor of Climate Change Impacts in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences . Educated at Cambridge (BA Geography) and Newcastle (MSc and PhD), she rose through the ranks following a NERC Postdoctoral Fellowship, becoming Reader in 2008 and Professor by 2012. Fowler’s research focuses on how climate change affects precipitation extremes, flooding, and hydrological systems, bridging global climate models and hydrology to deliver high-resolution projections that inform adaptation strategies. Her work has been widely recognised: she received the Philip Leverhulme Prize (2011), a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2014), was elected Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (2018), and awarded the 2024 Sergey Soloviev Medal for her outstanding contributions to climate impacts research. Additionally, she leads major funded initiatives (including an ERC Consolidator Grant), serves on international expert panels, edits key climate journals, contributes to IPCC assessments, and heads Newcastle’s Net Zero Task Force.

In sum, Professor Fowler combines world‑leading research, academic leadership, and policy engagement to improve our understanding and resilience to a changing climate, particularly in the context of extreme rainfall and flooding.
