Title
Professor Hugh Edward Montgomery, OBE (born 20 October 1962), is a distinguished English physician, researcher, clinician, author, and broadcaster. He serves as Professor of Intensive Care Medicine and Director of the Centre for Human Health and Performance at University College London (UCL), while also practising as a consultant intensivist at the Whittington Hospital in London
As a climate-health pioneer, he co-chaired multiple Lancet Commissions and now co-leads the annual Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, and initiated UCL’s MSc in Climate & Health, the children’s Project Genie, and founded the health-sector climate nonprofit Real Zero
He also delivers public lectures, writes fiction and children’s books, and—quite literally—set a world record playing the piano underwater. In 2022, he was appointed OBE for services to intensive care medicine and climate change.
Professor Montgomery exemplifies a modern-day polymath, blending frontline clinical care, pioneering science, global environmental advocacy, and creative outreach to confront some of the greatest challenges of our time.
