Big NEB Update

Exciting news! The People’s Emergency Briefing film has just passed 2,400 registered screenings across the UK, and beyond! This initiative couldn’t be more timely: record heatwaves, unprecedented ‘firewaves’, and warnings of catastrophic UK food system failure are a stark reminder that we are in a national emergency.

Over the last few months, the film has helped change the national conversation. It has received major press coveragementions in Parliament, and has even been discussed by film critics Kermode and Mayo!

A total of 131 MPs have called for a televised emergency briefing and the ripples from screenings are now spreading across all sectors of society with major national companies screening to their staff.

Please join the Big NEB Update on Friday 31 July, from 12:30 to 1:30pm, to hear what we've achieved together, some exciting updates on what's happening next, and how you can help. We'll share updates on schools, councils, workplaces and many other exciting developments.

Can’t make the call? Please register anyway with the link above and we'll send you a recording.

Please do forward this email to friends, family, colleagues you think will be interested in joining.

Open Letter to Andy Burnham

As Andy Burnham steps into Number 10, our experts have written an open letter to the new Prime Minister. We know Andy is receiving a lot of open letters at the moment, but we believe this is the only one with a full-page spread in the Financial Times.

The open letter makes the case for a televised emergency briefing, arguing that ‘national renewal depends on a shared understanding of the challenges ahead’. We’re grateful to Business Declares for helping to make this happen. We are hoping there will be an online version for easier sharing in the coming days.

Help us reach 100,000 signatures

As the momentum grows, we’re asking you to help create more publicity by signing Chris Packham’s Parliamentary petition. 100k signatures triggers consideration for a debate in Parliament - and such a debate would be a fantastic opportunity to secure national press coverage. If you haven’t already signed it, please do. Please could you also share on WhatsApp, asking friends, family and colleagues to join you.

This isn't the same petition that many of you kindly signed back in November. Unsure if you've signed? Please just give it a try. It won't duplicate your signature - if you've already signed, you will just see a confirmation of that on-screen.

The Rest Is Politics

The Rest Is Politics podcast has launched a new series exploring how nature loss has become a national security threat to the UK. The series focuses on the suppressed Joint Intelligence Committee report and is hosted by former Green Party MP Caroline Lucas.

It also features several experts from the National Emergency Briefing, including Lieutenant General Richard Nugee and Professor Paul Behrens.

Calling all hosts

If you’ve already hosted a screening in your community — huge thanks. Please could you email your attendees with this update from us? Feel free to add in some local news of your own. We want as many people as possible to know about what comes next.

Thank you for all your support, Simon and Nick, and the rest of the NEB team.
