Our first NEB-LIVE event with Professors Paul Behrens, Hayley Fowler, and Mike Berners-Lee

Yesterday we held our first NEB-LIVE event with Professors Paul Behrens, Hayley Fowler, and Mike Berners-Lee discussing the risks El Niño could pose for the UK. This is the first in an ongoing series of webinars where we give you access to the latest science on the climate and nature crisis from trusted experts.

Because this unprecedented El Niño potentially poses significant risk to communities across the UK, we are asking you to contact your MP. Use our template email to share the webinar and ask your MP how the government is assessing and preparing for the additional risks that El Niño could bring – including disruption overseas that could affect UK food supplies and prices.

Audience survey data published

After months of data gathering, Professor Lorraine Whitmarsh of Bath University and Dr Richard Clarke of University of Gloucestershire have published the results of their survey of audiences attending the People’s Emergency Briefing. It has already made headlines including in The Guardian: ‘Britons kept in dark about scale of climate crisis, say viewers of ‘first-of-its-kind’ emergency briefing’.

The research offers a brilliant insight into how audiences are reacting to the film (spoiler: 89% of attendees felt more informed and 87% felt more motivated to act after the briefing). For more stats, check out the full report and supplementary materials below.

Our sincere thanks to everyone who completed the survey or helped audiences take part. You’ve contributed to building a powerful evidence base showing that honest information, shared in a community setting, motivates people to act rather than disengage. That gives us an even stronger case for calling on government to brief the whole country.

Please note – the university survey team will officially complete their data gathering at midnight on Monday 19 October. We will update the screening guidance for hosts on this date. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact jamie@nebriefing.org.

National Lottery community fund Webinar

Have you set up a local community group after your People’s Emergency Briefing screening? Do you need funding for it?

Join us for a special webinar on Friday 16th October at 12.30pm to hear about funding for local community groups in England via The National Lottery Community Fund. Grants from £300 to £20k are available.

Jamie Russell, NEB Community Organising Lead, will be joined by Rebecca Pereira from The National Lottery Community Fund and Vicky Stone from Climate Friendly Bradford On Avon to talk about how to apply; what grants are available; and what a successful application looks like.

Please note – This session will be recorded. We will share a link to the recording with all registrants via email.

More MPs join the call for an emergency briefing by government

We’re delighted to welcome Sir Ed Davey MP to the list of 166 cross-party MPs supporting the Parliamentary Call for a televised, live emergency briefing by the government.

He is the first party leader to sign the Early Day Motion in Parliament calling on the government to hold a live emergency briefing to the nation, introduced by the Prime Minister, delivered by independent experts, and broadcast across TV, radio and social media. Thank you, Sir Ed!

There is clear evidence that urgent action will strengthen our economy, resilience, and quality of life.

The National Emergency Briefing exists to help create a societal tipping point towards the action now required. You can help make it happen.
