Briefing

on the climate and nature crisis

on the climate and nature crisis

It's time for a televised emergency briefing on the climate and nature crisis, introduced by the PM and delivered by independent experts, as the essential first step to unlock the wartime-scale response now required.

Our new film, presented by Chris Packham, is being screened in communities and workplaces across the UK to raise awareness and build public support for that government-led briefing.

The Westminster Briefing

Last November, ten of the UK’s leading experts briefed an invited audience of over 1,200 politicians and leaders from business, culture, faith, sport and the media.

The briefing set out the implications of climate and nature breakdown for health, food systems, national security and the economy.

Taking it nationwide

A 50-minute film is now taking the message into communities across the UK, and beyond.

Screenings in village halls, cinemas, faith spaces and workplaces are bringing constituents, civic leaders and MPs together to hear the evidence - and consider what an emergency response should look like.

Our ask

We are calling on the UK Government to stage a prime-time, multi-channel televised national emergency briefing to the nation, launching a major public engagement plan to communicate the scale and immediacy of the risks we face, combat rising disinformation - an essential step in building support for the wartime-scale response now needed.

MPs from across the parties are joining our Parliamentary Call for a televised emergency briefing. It's time for full transparency. Informing the public is a fundamental principle of democracy.

UK Progress

The UK has taken some major steps to protect our shared environment. Under the Conservative government, the UK was the first nation in the world to adopt a net zero target, and the UK is making excellent progress in building cheap homegrown renewables capacity. We are grateful to the politicians from across all the main parties who have worked hard to reach this point - and who remain committed to this essential work, often in the face of fierce resistance from vested interests.

But climate and nature crisis is a challenge of immense scale. It has been sidelined for far too long, and allowed to become a crisis - which now requires action at a far greater scale to avoid severe consequences. Progress is also frequently overstated, with certain types of emissions not yet included in official figures.

Read more about why UK progress is falling significantly short of the wartime-scale action that the scale of threat we are facing now demands.

"That's our home, it's the only one we've got. It’s where all of our species has lived and died, everyone, every single human.

It's where we breathe, it's where we eat, we laugh, we cry, we love, we hate and as far as we know, together with all the other wonderful life on Earth we are the only known life forms in the universe and we've got nowhere else to go."

The People's Emergency Briefing film

A full documentary from the briefing is now being shown across the UK. It brings together the science and national implications in one compelling film.

The film is designed for communities to watch together with their MP and other local decision makers - to see the same evidence - on the record - as those briefed in Westminster.

“The National Emergency Briefing could not be more timely. The science is moving fast, and every year the risks become clearer. Britain has led before, and we must lead again - not with words, but with action to protect our people, our prosperity and our children’s future. But first, all policymakers must ensure they are fully informed."

“We face a climate emergency. MPs need to be awake to the risks and ready for action, which is why I ask them to prioritise attending a local screening of the People's Emergency Briefing film."
