Claim: The public will panic or disengage if told the truth
Response
We now have strong evidence that the opposite is true.
An independent evaluation by researchers at CAST and the Universities of Bath and Gloucestershire drew on more than 13,000 responses from people who had just watched NEB's briefing film. Of those viewers, over half reported feeling more hopeful (vs 16% less) and 87% felt more motivated to act.
People don't panic when they're told the truth plainly by experts they trust. They lean in and they act. The real risk is a public left unprepared.
More Detail
The worry. Some fear that if government levelled with people about how serious the climate and nature crisis has become, they would panic, despair or switch off. It is an understandable instinct, but it is a prediction about behaviour, and we can test it.
The evidence. Researchers at CAST (Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations) surveyed audiences of our film, the People's Emergency Briefing. After watching:
89% felt more informed and 87% more motivated to act
Those extremely worried about climate change rose from 68% to 83%, and about nature loss from 68% to 80%
People better understood how the crises affect food prices, health, energy bills, jobs, insurance and national security
The longer people stayed, the more planned to contact a politician: 59% rising to 74%
It reaches Parliament. Constituencies with more screenings saw higher petition signature rates. Each extra screening raised an MP's weekly odds of signing NEB's Parliamentary Call by 17%; five screenings roughly doubled them.
A fair caveat. These audiences chose to attend and were already worried. That makes the result more telling: these are the people most likely to despair, yet concern and the will to act rose together.
Nothing new. Decades of disaster research find mass panic is rare. In the pandemic, people heard hard news from scientists and changed how they lived. What erodes trust is being told late, or sensing something is held back.
The ask. Government should hold a live emergency briefing to the nation, introduced by the Prime Minister, delivered by independent experts, and broadcast live across TV, radio and social media.
